Ten Piece Capsule Wardrobe Challenge

This month, I’ve decided to try something a bit different; I’m challenging myself to create a ten-piece capsule wardrobe that will yield thirty different looks that I’ll be sharing over the next month.  Now, because I don’t post daily, I’ll be doing a few double-ups, both Anne and Willow have volunteered to help out as models.

Usually when you set up a capsule wardrobe, you want to be careful—you have very few pieces to work with, and each piece has to work with everything else.  However, because I’m not the only participant in this project, I picked six pieces, and my volunteer models picked the other four.

Some of the pieces I selected (above) were easy choices.  I started with my tied-for-favorite jeans, they fit like an absolute dream and I can’t imagine not including them.  I then selected three basic, print-free tops, a cardigan, and after a lot of back-and-forth, opted for a white pencil skirt rather than a second pair of jeans or leggings.

Anne describes her fashion sense as being “all about free love, baby”—unlike yours truly, who only dabbles, she’s fully embraced her bohemian style and she completely owns it.  In fact, I did a blog post where we winterized one of her summer looks so she could survive the Danish winter in a maxi dress.

In all honesty, I can’t say I was surprised at her two picks (above).  She gravitated toward my most colorful, loudest, printed pieces, even though they’re both home-made.

Willow is the polar opposite, and describes her fashion sense as “a mix of Danish and Parisian”—she prefers muted tones and dark colors, but loves convenient pieces that are useful, easy to wear, season-less, and chic.

For her two pieces (above) she chose my hounds tooth slacks for a professional, polished series of looks, and a pair of basic, black leggings, “because you’d be crazy not to have a pair in the capsule”.

Here’s where we ended up:

In keeping with the spirit of the challenge, we also decided we’d limit our accessories.  Because there will be up to three of us in some of the posts, we decided we needed at least five of everything.  Five pairs of shoes, five bags, five pieces of jewelry, and five scarves/hats.

This should be interesting!

We’ll have the first outfit posts up soon.

  • What a great idea! I’m sure you’ll come up with some lovely combinations! I really love the hounds tooth pants and the lace skirt. Funny coincidence: I did this challenge myself last month. Only a handful of my fave pieces. Turned out I felt kinda limited in the end. But it was completely worth the try.

    • I have a feeling I may end up struggling to hit 30…hopefully not. Three are going up later today, and the next three in the next few days. That’s still only 1/5th of the goal. Not going to lie, I kinda wish we’d included earrings in the accessories.
