Ginger Gilroy Doll Review

Ginger Gilroy Doll Review

Variety is the spice of life, something I’ve said before and I’ll undoubtedly say again.  With that in mind, I’ve decided to add a new member to my doll community:  Ginger Gilroy. The folks at Integrity Toys also seem to like superhero style names.

Here’s what they had to say about Ginger:

“When you are the most famous teen models in America, what better than a little friendly competition to keep you on your toes? Which friend will get the guy? Which gal will be the homecoming queen? Who will land the cover of Miss Teen? To outsiders looking in, their rivalry is the stuff of legends, but in reality, for best friends Poppy Parker and Ginger Gilroy, it’s all a game and it’s all in good fun!

A long time in the making, the “Friend or Foe” gift set marks the debut of one of the most awaited characters in Integrity Toys’ history, Ginger Gilroy! With her scrumptious look and adorable smile, Ginger is sure to become the perfect companion to our beautiful gal Poppy!”

I’m not sure I’d classify that as a smile, but I am a sucker for delicate redheads.  The photo(s) above are official photos, everything beyond this point is my own. As for her being a “teen model”, I think I’ll go ahead and come up with my own story for her. But that’s another post.

Let’s start off her ensemble, shall we?:

Ginger comes wearing a lovely, pale blue bubble dress.

For those that don’t watch older movies, the bubble dress was very trendy for cocktail parties in the like during the late 1950’s and into the early 1960’s.  They popped up here over the years to a loud, mixed chorus of reviews from the fashion community.  Personally, I think this dress, and how it is styled, is just right.  Very old Hollywood glam.

The dress is well made with a soft fabric reminiscent of rough silk.

Ginger is also sporting pale blue coordinated pumps, decorated with an adorable bow, and a clutch purse. Unfortunately, I’m out of double sided-tape and she didn’t feel like cooperating to hold the bag. Ah well.

I’m pleased to say that, unlike so many heels that Barbie comes wearing, these heels not only keep their shape, but add a slight amount of posing stability with a harder plastic beneath. Huzzah!

For those that want to go all out, she also comes with a short fur shawl and a pair of opera-length white gloves.  As you can see, they are actually white-painted replacement hands with a slip of fabric for the arm – very cleverly done, as gloves can oftentimes look clunky.

With regards to her jewelry set, Integrity Toys has done something I’ve been begging Mattel to do for ages:  they’ve made it of metal.  Finally!

The pieces are a little heavier, sure, but they’re also very shiny and much more durable than the earrings that Barbie usually comes with.  Thank you for listening, Integrity Toys.

But what about the doll herself?

Well, as you can see, her body is different than both the Fashionista Barbie (pictured to the right) and the made to move barbie (pictured to the left).  She has more articulation than the Fashionista Barbie, but less than the made to move. She has a smaller head than the skater barbie and a larger thigh gap than the Fashionista.

She’s taller than both, bustier than both, has wider hips than both, yet still manages to have a waist that looks like she’s wearing a corset under her skin – and a tight one at that.  Still, I like diversity, that’s what this is all about.  I also love that her collarbones are more pronounced, how pale she is, and I even appreciate that she has nipples.

While she can touch her face, as I mentioned before, she doesn’t have as much articulation as a made to move Barbie, though she has more than your average fashionista because of the additional seam on her torso. Sadly, her ankles are in permanent heel-mode, there is no option for her to wear flats.

As with so many of the dolls I find myself drawn to, Ginger has a very pretty face.  She looks done up for a night on the town, though her makeup is still tasteful, she has high cheekbones and hand-applied lashes.

I would have preferred that she have green eyes, and perhaps a little less of a smirk, but I’ll somehow manage with this beautiful creature.

To my delight, I discovered that her titanium red hair – which is almost the same color as what Anne sports – is actually quite long and very curly after some gentle combing.  The product holding her stiff tresses is now mostly gone and I have no regrets.

Lastly, she not only has a manicure, but a pedicure, too.  How cute is that?

Now, I know I might get some flak for showing a nude doll, but frankly…I don’t care. Every one of us had a body and they’re nothing to be ashamed of; we come in different shapes, sizes, and colors, and there’s nothing wrong with that.

Thanks for stopping in and I’ll see you next time 😊
